“Harry could’ve asked Charles to contribute toward the cost of the house, but he chose not to,” a source revealed.
- Meghan Markle and Prince Harry recently purchased a new home in Montecito, Santa Barbara.
- The couple didn’t ask Prince Harry’s dad, Prince Charles, for any help when making the purchase.
- A source told Us Weekly that the couple wanted to buy their house independently of the royal family.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are getting settled into their new home in Montecito. Importantly, the couple decided to take on the mortgage themselves, without any financial support from the royal family whatsoever.
A source revealed to Us Weekly, “Harry could’ve asked [Prince] Charles to contribute toward the cost of the house, but he chose not to… Getting his dad financially involved would result in the royals having control over him. It would mean going backwards.” With a price tag of $14.65 million, taking on the mortgage between them is a sign that they’re ready to strike out and be financially independent.
The source also explained that the Sussexes “paid out of their own pockets [and] have taken out a huge mortgage.” While moving to the United States has undoubtedly been a massive change for Prince Harry, he is reportedly “loving being independent and sees it as an opportunity to grow.”
The couple’s spokesperson previously said in a statement to People, “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex moved into their family home in July of this year… They have settled into the quiet privacy of their community since their arrival and hope that this will be respected for their neighbors, as well as for them as a family.”
