Is This Kaia Gerber’s Latest Book Club Read?

Cracking open a new book is the perfect thing to do while social distancing: why not use this time to catch up on that pile of unread novels taunting you at home? Virtual book clubs have been kicking off as a result, too, offering a place for book lovers to meet—often via Zoom—and discuss their favourite authors. One such club founder is Kaia Gerber: last month, the model launched her own Instagram book club and opened up a weekly conversation with her followers, where they discuss a variety of reads together. (Her first novel for the virtual gathering was Sally Rooney’s Normal People, the literary hit of 2018.) This Friday, Gerber will continue on with the club by doing a live chat via Instagram with the writer Stephanie LaCava: they will discuss Françoise Sagan’s book, Bonjour Tristesse. But it seems Gerber already has a brand new book on the go: the Vogue cover star posted an Instagram today that showcases her latest read. Maybe it’s the next book club read?

Sharing a photo of herself getting some sun in a leopard-print bikini, Gerber is seen lounging (with a dog that she is currently fostering) with a book by her side. The novel is Me & Other Writing by Marguerite Duras, a nonfiction collection of essays from the French writer. The book—which is translated into English—explores 30 years of Duras’s work. In some chapters she offers her sharp opinions on the local news, in others, she offers her point of view on iconic designers such as Yves Saint Laurent. While Duras is most known for her fiction novels—The Lover, which is part fiction and autobiography, is one of her most-read works—Duras’s nonfiction essays give the reader a more introspective experience. Members of Gerber’s book club may want to get a head start on diving into its thought-provoking chapters: they will likely be discussed in the club very soon, and you’ll want to show up with notes.
