The Sun quotes a source as saying, “There was talk of engagement but now he says they have gone their separate ways, which has come as a real surprise to everyone.”
Apparently the split is especially surprising to friends of the couple, with one source revealing, “Chris and Dakota were very easygoing and always seemed really happy together.” Johnson seemed to become close to Martin’s ex-wife, with Derek Blasberg sharing a photo with both actresses on Instagram, cleverly captioned, “Consciously throupling”:

Johnson and Martin were spotted having dinner together in October 2017, and by December 2017 it was being reported that they were “definitely dating.” From there, the couple’s relationship seemed to get pretty serious, with the Fifty Shades of Grey actress spending Thanksgiving 2018 with Martin, Gwyneth Paltrow, their two kids —Apple and Moses—and Paltrow’s new husband, Brad Falchuk.
People reported at the time, per a source with knowledge of the situation, “They’re a total modern family and had a great time celebrating together.” Johnson also apparently spent the holidays with the Coldplay singer and his ex-wife. Martin and Johnson also fended off false pregnancy rumors in October 2018.
