Before stay-in-place orders ushered the world indoors, Cara Delevingne had big plans for Pride 2020. The actor and model has long been an LGBTQIA advocate, but her non-stop schedule had never allowed time for one of the month’s highlights: the annual parade and its rousing en masse festivities. “I’ve been lucky enough to work constantly, so I’ve had my little celebrations where I FaceTimed people who were there,” says Delevingne, on the phone from Los Angeles. “I’ve never been able to go to the event, which is sad, but Pride is something that I celebrate daily.”
In keeping with that spirit, Delevingne’s latest endeavor centers on the message behind the month of Pride. Her new capsule, From Puma with Love, is a 13-piece lineup of brightly colored loungewear, shoes, and hoodies that will be available June 1. A Puma ambassador since 2016, she previously worked with the brand on drops including last year’s boxing-themed PUMA x Balmain collection. With 20% of the proceeds going to charities like The Trevor Project, Mind Out, and GLAAD, her latest project connects with the issues close to Delevingne’s heart. “The LGBTQIA community has always been so important to me. This [collaboration] just made sense, you know? I’ve been so lucky with Puma, in everything we’ve ever discussed, they’ve always been open to new ideas and my perspective,” she says.
Delevingne’s point of view comes through in the clothing and its upbeat interpretation of the rainbow flag. T-shirts with graphic prints in multicolor ombre, the brand’s famous feline logo rendered in shades of purple and pink, crossbody bags, and sporty sandals all feature within the lineup. It’s no accident that the capsule’s vibe correlates to the current work-from-home wardrobe. “Obviously there are vibrant colors, but we wanted to do something different that wasn’t so obvious,” says Delevingne. “The pieces are unisex and fun, but they’re things people can wear every day, not just during Pride month.” A champion of streetwear and high-low style, Delevingne has already been testing out her wares. “I love the sandals, right now it’s just so easy and lovely to wear something you can slip on,” she says. “I’ve been wearing [the collection] a lot because it’s all so comfortable—especially for workouts.”
Daily exercise and meditation have become an essential part of Delevingne’s quarantine routine. She credits her weekly sessions with yoga instructor Colin Dunsmuir for keeping her centered. “Every Sunday, I am doing my practice with Colin, who has been integral to my self-care,” she says. “I wake up, practice, then take time to reflect and write—not to create because there is so much pressure to do things at the moment, but to stay motivated.” The habit is something she’s shared with fans via her Instagram Live yoga classes, which introduce newbies to the discipline. “For me, it’s been amazing. I don’t do Lives that much, so to see all these amazing comments and give back in that way has been wonderful,” she says. “[Before quarantine,] yoga was something that I’d kept personal, but to be able to share this with other people and give insight into what I do is nice. I definitely plan on continuing to share throughout quarantine.”
That kind of interactivity is built into the From Puma with Love mission statement. Digital hangouts, giveaways, and social media previews will all be a part of the collection’s launch. For Delevingne, online events provide a sense of community at a time when it’s especially necessary. “Right now, it’s important to be able to connect with other people and talk about how you feel,” she says. “So many people are going through such a hard time with illness or family members who are sick [so], to be able to keep motivated and positive is important.” Whether it’s with a smile-inducing T-shirt, helpful Instagram video, or a message of hope, Delevingne hopes to use her platform for good. “Now is the time to celebrate mental health and kindness, not just for our communities, but towards ourselves,” she says. “Pride is not just a concept, it’s a way of life.”
