Jennifer Lopez Defends Her Name Change to Mrs. Affleck After Wedding to Ben

“It feels like it’s a power move.

Jennifer Lopez insists she can be a strong feminist and a hopeless romantic at the same time—and we agree.

In a new interview, the singer and actress addressed the controversy surrounding her name change to Jennifer Affleck following her marriage to Ben Affleck.

“People are still going to call me Jennifer Lopez. But my legal name will be Mrs. Affleck because we’re joined together. We’re husband and wife. I’m proud of that. I don’t think that’s a problem,” she said.

When her interviewer asked if there isn’t a part of her that wants Ben to become Mr. Lopez, the Marry Me star laughed and said, “No! It’s not traditional. It doesn’t have any romance to it.”

The star may seem like she’s anything but traditional—she’s a 53-year-old multihyphenate with two kids, still performing her songs around the world, who just married one of her first loves and is continuing to advance her film career. But behind it all, she’s still passionate about age-old traditions, particularly when it comes to marriage and love.

“It feels like it’s a power move, you know what I mean?” she said of her name change. “I’m very much in control of my own life and destiny and feel empowered as a woman and as a person.”

Jennifer and Ben Affleck married in a private Las Vegas chapel ceremony on July 16, 2022, just three months after getting engaged. The small nuptials were attended only by their kids. But weeks later, in August, the actors threw a lavish wedding at Ben’s Riceboro, Georgia, estate—the elegant bash was attended by their family and close friends.

“I can understand that people have their feelings about it, and that’s okay, too,” the singer continued of her decision to become Jennifer Affleck. “But if you want to know how I feel about it, I just feel like it’s romantic. It still carries tradition and romance to me, and maybe I’m just that kind of girl.”
