She breaks down the visuals for “Tusa” and discusses new song “X” in the latest episode of Playback.
A good music video is an art form in and of itself. Weaving sound, cinematography, choreography, and narrative into one brief package is no small feat. So what exactly does it take to make a solid music video? In this episode of Playback, we give Karol G a chance to answer that question.
Karol G opens up about making the music video “Tusa” featuring Nicki Minaj, and discusses her recent collaboration with the Jonas Brothers, “X.”
Watch the videos below and read on for a rundown of the visuals.
ON WORKING WITH NICKI MINAJ …
Discussing the “Tusa” collaboration, Karol G reveals, “This was a super surprising thing for me, because I had this song and Nicki Minaj jump on it like right on time.” Having Minaj involved influenced the music video, and led to several majestic touches being added during production. Per Karol G, “I started, like, thinking, ‘Okay, I need this video to be something iconic, because it’s with her. Like, two girls, bossy girls. And I don’t know why, always when I think about Nicki Minaj, I have the pink color in my head.”
According to the singer, Minaj brought her own crown to set, “because all of us are queens, that’s the message of the video.”
ON FILMING IN AN ICONIC HOUSE …
Karol G noted that several other music videos have been shot in the very same property, including “Don’t Call Me Angel” by Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, and Lana Del Rey, and “Liar” by Camila Cabello. As she reveals, “That house had everything I wanted for the video. Like the garden, the inside of the house… it’s really beautiful.”
ON WORKING WITH THE JONAS BROTHERS …
Speaking about her next project, Karol G says, “I’m doing a collaboration with the Jonas Brothers… They called me, like two months ago, or three months ago… It’s like a crazy song… for the summer. I hope this song brings that feeling, that happiness.”
Of their single “X”, Karol G explains, “It’s a really beautiful time to see how these two worlds came together.”
