The Golden Globes have earned a reputation for being unpredictable. As the raucous start to awards season, the night serves up meme-worthy moments and big upsets — and the surprises start even before the ceremony begins. On the red carpet outside the Beverly Hilton, the stars of international cinema and TV compete for attention in their most glamorous attire.
2020’s attendees raised the stakes with haute couture, exquisite jewelry, and plenty of suiting, making for one of the most exciting years yet. Globes veterans led the pack in pieces that spoke to their fashion icon status. Cate Blanchett was luminous in a crystal-covered Mary Katrantzou gown with sculptural yellow sleeves that was at once futuristic and classic. Presenter Kerry Washington put a new spin on the harness in a daring design by Altuzarra.
The next generation of tastemakers proved equally interesting. Awkwafina dazzled in Dior’s ethereal update of the evening suit, while newcomer Joey King made an impact in Iris van Herpen’s 3-D printed stripes, much to the delight of onlookers. The best of the evening were united by a sense of grandeur that made their looks feel daring and definitive.
