“One should always be a little improbable,” Oscar Wilde once wrote, and indeed delightful flights of fancy are very much au courant at the Metropolitan Museum of Art tonight. Feting the exhibition “Camp: Notes on Fashion”—which, in order to capture that utterly eccentric aesthetic sensibility (described so persuasively in Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay “Notes on ‘Camp’ ”), draws on fashions both silly and sublime—the 2019 Met Gala is hardly lacking for spectacular red carpet moments. From Lady Gaga to Katy Perry, Kendall Jenner to Gigi Hadid, guests are transforming the party’s venerable venue into a feather- and flounce-filled fantasia—each doing their best to step up to the grand occasion.
