Want to hear some news that’s, like, totally fetch? The 2004 cult-classic comedy Mean Girls, which has since been turned into a successful Broadway musical, is coming back to the big screen. According to EW, Tina Fey—who wrote the screenplay and starred in the original movie (as the math teacher Ms. Norbury) and wrote the book for the musical—is working on a new Mean Girls film with Paramount Pictures. That’s right, the Plastics are coming back! But there’s a twist: The new film won’t be a sequel. Rather it’s a new film adaptation of the musical, making it a movie based on a musical based on…a movie. You follow?
There’s not much known about the movie-musical project yet, but the upcoming film will return to the original North Shore High setting. Unless you live under a rock, you already know the plot: Cady (played by Lindsay Lohan in the film) faces up to her high school nemeses the Plastics, a.k.a. Regina (head bitch), Gretchen (her suck-up minion), and Karen (can’t spell orange), who rule the school with their evil, backstabbing ways. The popular trio was originally played by Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, and Lacey Chabert. The difference in this new adaptation? There will now be song and dance to go along with all of the catty action.
“I’m very excited to bring Mean Girls back to the big screen,” Fey said in a statement, according to EW. “It’s been incredibly gratifying to see how much the movie and the musical have meant to audiences. I’ve spent 16 years with these characters now. They are my Marvel Universe and I love them dearly.”
While our incessant quoting of Mean Girls has kept its spirit alive since 2004—“Danny DeVito, I love your work!”—the launch of the Broadway musical in 2018 further cemented its status as a legendary piece of cinema. The plot of the musical mostly followed the film’s, though musical numbers like “Meet the Plastics” were added for camp factor. (“This whole school humps my leg like a chihuahua,” sings Regina.) A more recent tribute was included in Ariana Grande’s “Thank U, Next” music video.

The question remains: Will the Broadway cast star in the new film, or will brand-new talents take on the roles? Whoever the new group is, they’d best like wearing pink—especially on Wednesdays.
