Cannes, France — The Croisette is about to explode with adrenaline.
Hollywood megastar Tom Cruise is officially returning to the Festival de Cannes, bringing with him one of the most electrifying blockbusters of the year: Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. The much-anticipated installment of the high-octane franchise will premiere Out of Competition at the illustrious Grand Théâtre Lumière on Wednesday, May 14, in what is already shaping up to be one of the most talked-about nights of Cannes 2025.

Cruise will ascend the iconic steps of the Palais des Festivals alongside long-time collaborator and director Christopher McQuarrie, joined by a glittering ensemble cast that includes Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Pom Klementieff, Esai Morales, Henry Czerny, Angela Bassett, and Mariela Garriga. Cameras will flash, engines will roar, and hearts will pound as the world gets its first look at what’s being touted as Ethan Hunt’s final mission.
A Legacy Comes Full Circl
This marks Cruise’s third trip to Cannes—a cinematic full circle for the superstar. He first walked the red carpet here in 1992 for Ron Howard’s Far and Away, but it was his triumphant 2022 return with Top Gun: Maverick that etched his name permanently into the festival’s mythology.

That year, not only did he receive a rare honorary Palme d’Or, but he also delivered a standing-ovation-worthy masterclass on the art and daredevilry of filmmaking.
Now, Cruise is back—older, wiser, but no less daring—as he prepares to bid farewell to a character he has embodied across nearly three decades and seven films.
The Reckoning Begins
The Final Reckoning picks up where 2023’s Dead Reckoning Part One left off, thrusting Hunt and his team into their most urgent mission yet. This time, the threat is not just global—it’s existential. Hunt is locked in a high-stakes race to defeat “The Entity”, a rogue artificial intelligence with the potential to destabilize the world order.

With the fate of humanity hanging in the balance, Hunt must reunite his team and descend into the depths of danger—literally. The story leads him to a sunken Russian submarine, the resting place of the elusive source code that holds the key to disabling the Entity forever. In true Mission: Impossible fashion, audiences can expect death-defying stunts, espionage-laced tension, globe-trotting locations, and explosive set pieces that redefine the term “edge-of-your-seat.”
Cruise, of course, performs many of his own stunts—rumor has it this film includes a deep-sea dive sequence and a motorcycle jump off a collapsing glacier that took months of planning and training.
Behind the Action
Directed and co-written by Christopher McQuarrie, who has helmed the last three M:I films, the finale is the culmination of a creative partnership that has become one of Hollywood’s most reliable action-driven collaborations. McQuarrie teams up again with writer Erik Jendresen (Band of Brothers) to give the saga a narratively satisfying and emotionally charged send-off.
Produced by Paramount Pictures and Skydance, the film is set to premiere in French cinemas on May 21, followed by a U.S. release on May 23, 2025—perfectly timed for the Memorial Day weekend box office sprint.
Cannes and the Art of the Blockbuster
Though Cannes is typically known for its auteur-driven fare and highbrow prestige, it has never shied away from celebrating cinematic spectacle. Cruise’s presence represents the festival’s embrace of grand-scale, crowd-pleasing cinema at its most finely crafted. After all, if Top Gun: Maverick proved anything, it’s that there’s still room for old-school thrills in a world dominated by CGI and streaming.

And with this being Ethan Hunt’s final bow, The Final Reckoning isn’t just another sequel—it’s a farewell, a victory lap, and a tribute to one of the most enduring action heroes of modern cinema.
As the Riviera prepares for yet another unforgettable moment, one thing is certain: When Tom Cruise hits Cannes, it’s never just a screening—it’s an event.
