Pablo Larraín, known for his work on “Jackie,” directed Angelina Jolie in the role of Maria Callas for his latest film, which delves into the life of the iconic singer known as the original diva.
The Venice Film Festival has revealed that the biopic “Maria,” directed by Pablo Larraín and centered on the legendary Maria Callas, will make its competitive debut this September. Angelina Jolie takes on the role of the iconic opera singer, joined by a talented cast that includes Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher, Haluk Bilginer, and Kodi Smit-McPhee.

As detailed on IMDB, “Maria” chronicles the life of the unparalleled opera star during her twilight years in Paris in the 1970s. This marks another entry for Larraín at Venice, following his previous successes with “El Conde,” which earned him the Best Screenplay award, as well as “Spencer,” featuring Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana, and “Jackie,” where Natalie Portman portrayed Jacqueline Kennedy. Each of these films received at least one Oscar nomination.
“I am incredibly excited to start production on Maria, which I hope will bring Maria Callas’s remarkable life and work to audiences all around the world, thanks to the magnificent script by Steven Knight, the work of the entire cast and crew, and especially, Angelina’s brilliant work and extraordinary preparation,” said Larrain.

“Maria” will go head-to-head with other notable films, including Pedro Almodovar’s “The Room Next Door,” Todd Phillips’ “Joker 2: Folie à Deux,” Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer,” and Justin Kurzel’s “The Order.”
The film is produced by Juan de Dios Larraín for Fabula Pictures, Lorenzo Mieli for The Apartment Pictures, a Fremantle Company, and Jonas Dornbach for Komlizen Film.
