Gigi Hadid and Serena Williams Will Play in a Virtual Charity Tennis Match This Weekend

Gigi Hadid and Serena Williams have been friends for years, but for the first time the pair are going head-to-head in a tennis match. No, it’s not on an actual court—instead, Hadid and Williams will headline a Mario Aces Tennis tournament that will be streamed on Facebook Gaming. The tournament, organized by IMG Tennis, will see tennis champions facing off in the Nintendo Switch video game against models, athletes, and celebrities as Mario characters. In addition to Hadid versus Williams, the competition will also feature Hailey Bieber versus Naomi Osaka, Karlie Kloss versus Maria Sharapova, Venus Williams against DeAndre Hopkins, and more.

Gameplay will begin at 4:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday, May 3. Each player will receive a $25,000 donation to a charity of choice for participating, with the winner of the tournament receiving an additional $1 million donation to their charity. The event will be announced by tennis legend John McEnroe and YouTuber iJustine.

This is just one of the ways creatives are using their self-isolations to help raise money and spirits during the novel coronavirus pandemic. Earlier this month, Lady Gaga hosted the One World: Together at Home concert to raise money for the Solidarity Defense Fund, and in March, Elton John helped raise more than $1 million for those impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic with the iHeart Living Room Concert for America.

Who will win? Is Serena Williams as unbeatable in video games as she is on the court? Will Gigi Hadid play as Princess Peach or Yoshi? And what will everyone be wearing? All these questions will be answered on the stream this weekend.
