Today, the Duke of Cambridge helped virtually open the NHS Nightingale Hospital in Birmingham, England. The latest U.K. field hospital was constructed inside the National Exhibition Centre and is the second of seven hospitals being constructed around England in response to the coronavirus outbreak. Before the official opening, Prince William spoke via video call to some of the workers who helped build the emergency facility, and also thanked the emergency responders working tirelessly to combat the novel virus.

Viewers observe social distancing measures while watching Prince William’s speech to mark the opening of the NHS Nightingale Hospital Birmingham.

“Let me start by reiterating all that has been said so far and paying tribute to the incredible work that NHS staff across the country have been doing to tackle the coronavirus pandemic. Their selfless commitment has touched the hearts of the entire nation,” he said in his speech. “The building you are standing in is yet another example of how people across the country have risen to this unprecedented challenge. The Nightingale hospitals will rightly go down as landmarks in the history of the NHS.

“The NHS Nightingale Hospital Birmingham is a wonderful example of Britain pulling together, and having spoken to some of the people who helped build it, hospitals are about the people and not the bricks,” he continued. “NHS staff, armed forces, local government, and the private sector have collectively stepped up to turn this Exhibition Centre into a Hospital. You all deserve our huge thanks, and you should all be hugely proud of what you have achieved in such a short space of time.”

Due to the health crisis, members of the royal family are following government advice to self-quarantine at their homes with their families. While Prince William, Duchess Kate, and their children are currently quarantining at Anmer Hall in Sandringham, Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla continue to work from their Birkhall estate in Scotland, with Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip isolating together at Windsor Castle.
